What I'm Researching & Building

Spatiotemporal Day-Ahead Solar Forecasting with synthetic CSI

Research Assistant at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University • Supervisor: Prof. Li Mengying

  • Scaling single-station atmospheric forecasting into a citywide spatial graph framework to capture localized cloud transmission and solar irradiance dynamics.
  • Integrating multisource satellite imagery (Himawari-8/9, CAMS) with synthetic CSI.

Landfalling Hurricane Wave Dynamics

Moody's & Imperial College London • Supervisors: Dr. Lluis Via-Estrem (Moody's), Prof. Matthew Piggott (Imperial)

  • Developed deep latent surrogate models to learn complex wind-to-wave interactions during tropical cyclone landfalls.
  • Emulated heavy numerical hydrodynamic and spectral wave solvers (MIKE 21) to enable rapid storm wave height estimation across coastal Florida.

ESG Sentinel Analyst

Elevate Global (Hong Kong)

  • Monitored real-time ESG risk incidents and supply chain sustainability metrics using automated data streams.
  • Applied machine learning and NLP models to screen global news and regulatory datasets for emerging environmental risks.

Data Assimilation in Chaotic Systems

Undergraduate Research at HKUST • Supervisor: Prof. Julian Mak

  • Investigated Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) techniques to mitigate initial condition sensitivity in non-linear Lorenz models.
  • Explored parameter optimization strategies in sequential data assimilation to stabilize chaotic trajectory forecasts.

Personal Background

I was born in Hangzhou and grew up mostly in Hong Kong. I created this site as a personal space to share my research, side projects, and interests in a relaxed, open format.

Fun fact: My Chinese name is 都天炬 (Du Tianju). People usually assume my surname is 杜 because of Pinyin, but it's actually 都—coincidentally, 杜 is my mother's surname!
